da winzada777: Richard Sutcliffe, of The Athletic, has been swooning over David McGoldrick’s involvement in George Baldock’s goal during Sheffield United’s 1-1 draw against Tottenham Hotspur.
What did he say?
McGoldrick’s goal being disallowed following a lengthy VAR check was, understandably, among the biggest talking points of Sheffield United’s match against Spurs, as he was adjudged to be millimetres offside.
While many fans were left with a lasting sense of fury regarding the decision, as shown in The Athletic’s discussion section, McGoldrick managed to keep his head, eventually playing a key role in his side getting the equaliser.
While he did speak about the questioned decision, Sutcliffe also wanted to point out how impressive this contribution was:
“Away from VAR, thought there were some very good displays. McGoldrick’s work for the goal was brilliant. Willing to stay patient near halfway, passing to teammates and accepting return pass….before then darting past his man, exchanging passes with Fleck and rolling pass to Baldock. Brilliant.”

Sums up his season
This tells the story of McGoldrick’s season so far. He may have failed to score – which is often seen as a sign of an underperforming frontman – but he has still been able to make an impact for Chris Wilder’s side.
There are signs from his statistics that he has been a useful asset, winning 2.2 aerial duels per game, as well as averaging 1.6 dribbles, 0.7 key passes and even 1.8 tackles each match.
However, it is also how wholeheartedly the 31-year-old was defended from any negative comments that shows how important he is deemed to be by Wilder, as reported by The Yorkshire Post earlier this term, he said: “An international player… Any sort of negativity or criticism towards him is ridiculous because he gives everything for this football club and is brilliant for us.”
The contribution he has made this campaign may go unnoticed by many because he hasn’t been banging in the goals, but that won’t be the case among many within Bramall Lane.
