According to the front page of Mexican newspaper Record, via Sport Witness, Wolves are winning the race to sign Edson Alvarez.
What’s the word?
Wolves haven’t shown too many signs of being in the market for new players this summer, but one name that has now come up more than once is the versatile Alvarez.
Mediotiempo reported last month that Nuno Santo’s men had entered negotiations with his club side America over a possible transfer, but it now looks as though they’re winning the race to get him.
That’s per the print version of Record who claim negotiations are now developing between the respective parties.
Earlier in July, Ajax were reportedly in the running to sign the 21-year-old who appears destined for pastures new.

Dendoncker under threat
Alvarez has the ability to play in defence and in midfield but if his recent displays at the Gold Cup alongside Raul Jimenez are anything to go by, he could put Leander Dendoncker’s place in serious threat if he makes the move.
The Mexican had a disastrous World Cup in 2018, being named in WhoScored’s worst team of the tournament. However, Goal’s Mexico correspondent Jon Arnold has since claimed that he’s bounced back.
He featured in Russia as a right-back but it’s in the middle of the park that he looks reborn, helping his country, who he’s been capped 22 times by, to win the Gold Cup.
Per Arnold, he’s become a crucial part of the national team and it’s easy to see why.
With Alvarez in the team, he helped his side keep three clean sheets in the six games he played in. The Mexico national team were also extremely comfortable in possession, something that could help the youngster adjust to life in the Midlands if he signs.
In Mexico’s last 11 games, they’ve kept 59.33% of the possession on average. He even helped his side restrict USA to just two shots on target in the final.

Playing in a similar role to Dendoncker at Wolves, the Mexican was lauded as someone with a physical presence who could come into the midfield after starting an attack.
That’s comparable to the Belgian who claimed two goals last term, finishing the season with a pass success of 79.4%, proving influential in defensive scenarios, as well as attacking ones.
But with the potential arrival of Alvarez who shone at the Gold Cup, Dendoncker’s place could be in danger.
