da bwin： Monkey see, monkey do. It’s the principle behind almost every internet trend. After all, we’re all staring at the same sorts of screens, the same content and the same websites. We have started to find all the same things funny. Virals are, after all, viral. They infect us all.Less than a week after Messi and Suarez pulled off the most creative / disrespectful / entertaining (delete as appropriate) penalty we have seen in quite some time, it’s no surprise that it’s been attempted again. This time by Arsenal’s U-15 side:
Entertaining? Sure. Creative? Monkey see, monkey do, but let’s at least give them some credit for doing what club legends Thierry Henry and Robert Pires couldn’t do.
But there’s a bigger issue at stake – as a goalkeeper or a defender, how can you not think your opponents are going to do that? In the week that pass-penalties have had more press-coverage than most celebrities, how can you not be alert to the fact that this might actually be coming?
This Arsenal penalty isn’t particularly well executed – the point is to make the goalkeeper dive before you pass it to a teammate who has the whole of the goal to aim at and no keeper left to save it. But the goalkeeper facing Arsenal isn’t fooled by the original penalty-taker, he doesn’t dive. And so why isn’t he running out to close down the angle?
The video has gone viral because they managed to score it, but imagine how bad it would have been for Arsenal had they missed it? Imagine if that goalkeeper had done his job and closed down the angle – it was ripe for saving!
None of the defenders seem to care, they don’t close the ball down or attempt to stop it. It’s an under-15 game, so of course any criticism has to be prefixed with an admission that these are merely kids, so you can’t be too harsh. But that’s exactly the problem. However harsh it seems to criticise them for scoring the penalty, imagine the internet’s reaction if they’d missed it! They’re lucky, really.
Monkey see, monkey do. But for their sake, I’m relieved they scored!
