da cassino: There is currently a bidding war going on between Europe’s biggest clubs for 18-year old Monaco star Kylian Mbappé, who scored 26 goals for last season’s Champions League semi-finalists.
da bet nacional: But before Mbappé arrived on the scene, another Monaco forward was the talk of the town and moved to the Premier League as football’s most expensive teenager in history.
One of Louis van Gaal’s final purchases as Manchester United was 19-year old Anthony Martial, a player with only one full season of senior football under his belt and who was largely unknown to Premier League fans. The Frenchman cost the Red Devils £36million up front, with add-ons potentially pushing the deal to a whopping £57million.
Martial wasted no time showing United fans what he could do, scoring a wonderful goal in his debut against Liverpool before scoring a brace in his full debut eight days later against Southampton. He finished the season as United’s top goal scorer, bagging 11 league goals and 17 across all competitions. Despite Van Gaal’s sacking at the end of the season, hopes were still high that Martial could carry his form into Jose Mourinho’s first season in charge.
Those high hopes have taken a tumble, as the Red Devils are reportedly close to completing a deal for Inter Milan winger Ivan Perisic, which may see Martial move in the opposite direction. Should this deal go through, Jose Mourinho would be making a mistake he has made several times before: letting a young star go way too soon.
Players like Kevin De Bruyne and United new boy Romelu Lukaku are prime examples of what to expect out of Martial should the 21-year-old be pushed out of Old Trafford. Both Belgians were sold from Chelsea after failing to break into the senior team and are now considered two of the Premier League’s best players, both at Stamford Bridge rivals.
A move for 28-year old Perisic fits the win-now model that Mourinho has seemed to adopt, which hurts the development of young players such as Martial, and De Bruyne and Lukaku when they were at Chelsea.
The 21-year old French forward still managed to score eight goals and create eight more despite inconsistent playing time and is still just as quick and dangerous as he was two seasons ago. It is difficult to see what Croatian international Perisic, who has never played in England, would offer that Martial does not.
Martial is a player that managed to score almost 25% of his team’s goals in a horrendous Louis Van Gaal attack in 2014-15 and garnered a record fee at just 19-years old. He has the talent to play at any of Europe’s big clubs but is surprisingly being pushed out by Mourinho.
Even if the French international isn’t included in the Perisic deal, it is tough to see where he fits in to the United attack. Lukaku and Marcus Rashford prevent him from playing as a striker, while Juan Mata, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, potentially Perisic and even Rashford would likely be preferred on the wing.
Anthony Martial is a player that most clubs across the globe would love to have, but for some reason he doesn’t seem to be in Jose Mourinho’s plans. Maybe not being in the Portuguese’s plans isn’t a bad thing. It worked out well for De Bruyne, Lukaku, Andre Schurrle, Arjen Robben and more.
But one thing is for sure, if Mourinho does let Martial go, he’ll regret it.
