We’ve seen the manager actually opt for two midfielders in the defence rather than playing Otamendi in recent weeks as Fernandinho and Rodri have both dropped back into those roles.
However, next week will provide us with a clearer picture of Otamendi’s future. Fernandinho was sent off late on against Aston Villa so he will miss the Southampton game, and if Pep opts to start anyone other than the 31-year-old at the back we will know that the Argentine is well and truly out of the reckoning.
