da blaze casino: Anthony Martial may have a more central striker role to look forward to if he stays at Manchester United next season, according to Mail Online.
da bwin: United boss Jose Mourinho is ready to increase the starting opportunities for the Frenchman, as well as for teammate Marcus Rashford, with the forward struggling for regular playing time this season. Mourinho also believes that neither player has developed as well as they should have in the wide roles they’ve most commonly been deployed in.
What’s the story?
The Portuguese manager is aware of the possibility that main front-man Romelu Lukaku could return tired and jaded after his spell with Belgium at the World Cup this summer, and while he will remain Mourinho’s go-to centre forward, he may need a rest at the start of the new season.
Martial and Rashford are also likely to feature for their national teams in Russia, but more sparingly. In addition, Mourinho is sympathetic to the two young players’ concerns over the lack of prospects they have had to break into the first team, and has thus opened the door for them to make their mark over the next couple of weeks leading up to the FA Cup final.
However, it remains unclear whether Martial will still be there next season. Mourinho has become infamous for stepping out of the way of any player who wants to leave the club, often resulting in the ultimately well-rounded and highly capable version of these players excelling at a rival (such as Mohamed Salah and Kevin De Bruyne).
United’s board have recognised this particular danger with Martial, and, given his ability, are keen to keep him. The Mail’s report claims Chelsea, Tottenham, Juventus, Atletico Madrid and PSG are all interested in the French attacker – who Transfermarkt value at £58.5million.
Should he stay or should he go?
Martial is proud to be at United, which is undeniably a storied club, and moving to his preferred centre-forward role would be an exciting challenge for him. But it is no secret that Martial is itching to play more regularly, and has been less than thrilled with his reduced role, so much so that his agents have turned down offers from United in renewing the terms of his contract, which has one year left plus a twelve-month extension.
At only 22, Martial has an entire career ahead to think about, and so should focus on his long-term development. Can he trust the club to offer him the right deal, and more crucially, will Mourinho deliver on his promise? Amid other clubs’ maintained interest, Martial will have to carefully weigh his options to best determine where the most potential playing time will come from and where his future really lies.
Certainly, if Mourinho doesn’t use Martial to benefit from all that he has to offer, he will be wasting a great talent.
