da doce: Newcastle United have been warned against the idea of appealing Nick Pope’s red card which he picked up in the defeat on the weekend against Liverpool.
Can Newcastle appeal Nick Pope’s red card?
da bet vitoria: It was a pretty disappointing weekend on the whole for Newcastle who saw a lot go against them over the course of Saturday and Sunday.
The Tynesiders lost their game against Liverpool and saw Tottenham Hotspur leapfrog them on Sunday to go back into the top four.
However, their main concern will be the straight red card for Pope who will, therefore, miss the Carabao Cup final on the weekend at Wembley Stadium.
Eddie Howe’s men have the option to appeal the decision, however, speaking on Sky Sports’ Ref Watch, Dermot Gallagher has suggested they would be wasting their own time in doing so:
“They can launch an appeal today. They will have to prove the referee made a clear and obvious error. I would suggest the chances of that are very remote because of what I’ve said – he’s moving towards goal, he’s got the ball, the covering defender, if he got back, is not a goalkeeper – so highly, highly unlikely.”
What games will Nick Pope miss for Newcastle?
As a result of his error against the Reds, Pope is now set to miss the final at Wembley on Sunday as well as the following two games in Newcastle’s schedule.
The games after the final on Sunday include a trip to Manchester City and then a game at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers.
On the weekend, Newcastle will also be without Martin Dubravka with the Slovakian goalkeeper ineligible having played in the competition for Manchester United earlier in the season.
Therefore, it is expected Loris Karius will line up between the sticks for Howe’s side but they will have Dubravka available for the final two league games of Pope’s suspension.
In the days following the red card shown to Pope, the likes of Gary Lineker have spoken out urging for the goalkeeper to be made available to play in the final.
However, Newcastle recently saw Bruno Guimaraes serve his red card picked up in the Carabao Cup in the last three league games meaning he is available for the game on Sunday.
So in that sense, it does feel as if this is just something the Toon Army are going to have to take on the chin.
