da dobrowin: According to Monday’s edition of De Telegraaf (via Sport Witness), Tottenham were interested in signing Edson Alvarez in the January transfer window.
What’s the word?
da betcris: Despite the north London side boasting a number of options at centre-back, including the likes of Toby Alderweireld, Jan Vertonghen and Davinson Sanchez, amongst others, it appears Spurs were keen on bringing another one in.
De Telegraaf claim that Jose Mourinho’s team were “concrete” for a transfer, but that Alvarez himself was told that he wouldn’t be going anywhere by the likes of Marc Overmars and Erik ten Hag.

The report further adds that the Mexican was led to believe he would be used more over the second-half of this campaign, but that things so far haven’t turned out that way.
Competition
Judging purely based on his stats this season, a swoop for Alvarez would have made a whole load of sense for Spurs.
In the 11 appearances that he has made in the Eredivisie, the 22-year-old averages a mightily impressive 1.8 interceptions per game. Sanchez on the other hand averages just 1.3 in the Premier League. Alvarez’s fine reading of the game may have seen him take a bit more readily to the top-flight, where he could rely more on his in-game nous than his physical attributes.
When did that happen?! Premier League experts will know which surprising clubs these stars once played for…
But even still, with Vertonghen remaining at the club for now, Spurs do have a wealth of options in that position. It therefore would have been incredibly difficult to see how the 6 foot 2 Alvarez would have gotten any more game-time in north London, than he is currently getting over in Amsterdam.
Meanwhile, Jose Mourinho’s late call against Wolves was pathetic.
